My name is Dan Wall. I live in Utqiagvik (Barrow), AK, which is the heart of my claims to great Northiness. In times past, I lived in Northern Arizona and worked on the Navajo Nation, but I always wanted to live on a beach, …at least I think I did. Just consider me the bearded cat-lady of the arctic.
I used to be a bilagáana, now I am a tanik, but my girlfriend just calls me a gringo. She could probably tell you I’m no good in either event. I live to head-butt kittens, and my greatest accomplishment in life is probably an incident of projectile vomiting. (Don’t skoff! It was brilliant.)
Mostly I teach for my food, but there was a brief period when I pushed puppies for a living (first pet’s free kids). I like spicy foods, foreign movies, RPGs, and bad jokes.
This blog has one theme and one thing only, whatever the Hell I feel like writing about at any given moment. That is all.

Haha, Dan, I had to laugh at “the bearedd catlady of the arctic”, and, of course, I had to look up Bilagaana and Tanik. Now I sort of half-know. BTW, after reading your Native-Indians-films entry I expect you’ve seen James Cameron’s Avatar? The same criticism (the Na’vi needed a white man to save themselves) was levelled at the storyline.
Ooh, good point about Avatar. I may have to work that in somehow. Hm…
Yeah, I’m a cat lady. My students all tease me about it. there aren’t too many cats up here, so it stands out even more.

Thanks for liking Blood Quantum. I just do not “get” how obsessed people become over race and ethnicity and the hatred some eject because someone is not just like them. You’ve developed quite a large following, Dan. I have Chateau as my theme also. Myself, I find the default type color for the black background, which I also use, tough on the eyes. In case you’re interested you can get around that by using the next-to-white font color. I use white, but it makes the words invisible on the format screen–which can be a real pain.

I fly over Alaska every year when I go back to Japan. Once I landed at Alaska for connecting flights. The landscape I saw then was one of the most exotic ones ever. I was also shocked that the airport had a Japanese noodle shop.

I was smiling with tears at the stories. The hardest thing we have ever done was decide to put one of our cats down. His name is Red but it got to the point where we couldn’t touch him without him crying in pain. His kidneys went bad then the rest of his body quickly shut down. I don’t know if I will ever be able to do it again. My wife and I have been taking care of and finding homes for stray cats for 30yrs. We have almost stopped in the last couple of years because of money and health problems. We just took in a new cat though. I’ve posted about her and her babies.The neighbors do like that lady that brings kittens to the shelter year after year. We hope to be able to convince her to get the cats that are left around her house spayed or neutered if we offer to help. Your descriptions of your travels is very good. I had an uncle that lived outside of Anchorage for about 20yrs. until the early 90’s. Thanks for the interesting stories.

Thanks for stopping by my “prosaictraveller”. I read a couple of your posts and love your stories of the North. I have always enjoyed seeing other parts of the world that I know I will never get to see.
Dan – how do you make your blog show the “Share This” and “Like This” buttons appear in the default post. On my posts, they open up only when I click on the comments link or the title. I have tried all the various settings. I even tested the Chateau theme you’re using. Did you actually customize the theme for this feature?
Your blog is the only one I have seen that does this for default, hence I asked.
You know, I’m actually not sure what I did. I remember I tried dozens of different things including threats and profanity before they appeared, and I honestly don’t remember what finally worked. I’ll look around and see if I can figure out how it’s working.

I also did some work with the Navajo people, although it was only for a summer. We were in Klagetoh, AZ. I was amazed by the people there. When I asked the children, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” they did not understand the question. Their desire to “be” anything has been stolen from them over the years. Sad to see. PS Interesting that it was the establishment (recognition?) of a police force that solved the Navaho raiding problem. So, now we have a collective to blame – “The police should do something about . . . “, or “I will call the police . . .”
Here in the UK we have just had a few instances of Eastern European individuals taking the law into their own hands – in a most civilised way – the owner of a business recently caught one of his employees with his hand in the till and promptly hung a sign round his neck “I am a thief” he then frog marched him through the town centre to the police station. Here the thief was released and the business owner was arrested for kidnap. It caused a few raised eyebrows but only a little sympathy. It seems we aren’t too keen on one on one justice either!

You must like cats? I have done projectile vomiting, but it was due to horrid food poisoning & was so horrid that I had no thoughts @ all about being filmed for another Exorcist tryst. I am very pleased that my Scary Cat Head got any attention. And I am bad about the two letter state abbreviation, thinking “There are beaches in Arkansas?” Ooops–is there such a thing as a Barrow Alaska refrigerator magnet ? -I have one from Riverton, Kansas. Paris, France, Paris, Texas–I just like to collect them!

I love your Vegas street art segments. You’ll have to check out the cultural contributions of the Boulder City walls on your next visit. Oh, and you may have to make some time to venture out to Pahrump/Amargosa too! No erotic museum adventure is complete without the rare finds available in Nye County… and while you won’t find a review for it on my site, I highly recommend lunch at Sheri’s. It’s not everyday you can have a family dining experience in a brothel, amidst the merchants no less – free tours included!

I was looking to talk to someone and I know you have an interest in both Native American issues and movies. I heard some news today that a movie that came out earlier this month that used a slur that is associated with a native community in northern New Jersey and portrayed them (by Woody Harrelson!) as violent hillbillies living among garbage.
Anyway, I know some of these people and apparently they’re pretty upset by it. The kids are now getting harassed at school because of the movie – or so one of the teachers at the school told my mother.
Whether or not they should be considered an Indian tribe or not is a contentious issue. In any case, they’re a racially mixed community that has been living in the area for about three hundred years. It amazes me that unless people have been taught to be sensitive about racism directed at a particular group of people they seem to be unable to apply general principles. As I mentioned, I have some mild familiarity with the community and they have suffered from prejudice quite enough in their history. That the director/writer would do this is shocking to me. For the time being, I’m assuming the actors didn’t know that the script was referencing a real group of people.
Unfortunately, I haven’t seen the movie. I kind of hate calling a movie racist if I haven’t seen it.
It’s always a tough question as to whether or not a given character speaks for the movie as a whole. Maybe the point was to portray the character as racist, and maybe it was to actually express a negative view, or both. …hard to say without seeing the movie. But of course sometimes the harm is done regardless of the intent behind the story. It’s a damned shame to hear of kids getting flack for something like this. Do you know if there is any chance to counteract the movie’s message in the community?

Met the neighbor of my rental house in Temecula accidentally today, when I was there to fix a leak at my tenants. Turns out she is from Alaska, only comes here for a month or two every year. Where in Alaska, I asked. Barrow, the top of the world, she said. Wow, I know a guy named Dan (didn’t remember your last name). She didn’t know you. Works for the government there. Got a kick out of it though. Barrow’s population is listed at 4,200. What are the odds?

I would like to compliment you on your writing as I found myself unable to stop reading and moved from one post to the next without hesitation (this hasn’t been helpful in getting my work done but, who wants to work anyway). Projectile vomiting?
Okaaaaay … I was young, cold, alone in San Francisco at night on my way back to the ship with an armful of new books. Stopped at a bar for a drink. The barman was Japanese and I remembered that sake is served hot. Ish. I also knew some of the words and ritual, the barman was impressed and bought me the next one.
I reciprocated, after which so did he; and so did I etc etc … somewhere in the evening was a bowl of clam chowder, I think. Anyway—
I awoke next morning to a redecorated world. Clam chunder is every bit as good as a spray-paint bomb, I tell you. If there were an Olympic Projectile Vomiting event I’d have taken gold and set an unbeatable world record … (and I still had my books, but no idea how I ever made it back to the ship).
OML! You look cold! I think I need to get my sweater now! But first, thanks so much for the follow. I look forward to coming back and having a look around! 🙂 Stay warm!

Sitting at my little cabin at 7,000 feet in Ruidoso, NM, less than 10 miles from Dahteste’s grave. Somehow I discovered your website and read your very interesting review of the movie. Now I will have to watch it.
In 2015 we have a mare give birth to an interesing looking filly at our ranch in Texas.
The filly has very unusual white markings on her head and has one black eye and one blue eye. The blue eye is very spooky.
Since we come to New Mexico quite often (over place in just 5 mintues from the Mescalero reservation I started looking for the Apache words for medicine woman
and that is how I learned about Dahteste.
That is what we named our filly who now at age three has becom a pretty good
race horse. She has been running in Idaho and now is being shipped to California for a big race.
She is a gorgeous filly from a great pedigree and we hope she makes quite a bit
more money and lives a long life as a broodmare.
I have a connection with the Apaches that says he can get permission for someone to take her to Dahteste’s grave. That will be a good day.
