About

My name is Dan Wall. I live in Utqiagvik (Barrow), AK, which is the heart of my claims to great Northiness. In times past, I lived in Northern Arizona and worked on the Navajo Nation, but I always wanted to live on a beach, …at least I think I did. Just consider me the bearded cat-lady of the arctic.

I used to be a bilagáana, now I am a tanik, but my girlfriend just calls me a gringo. She could probably tell you I’m no good in either event. I live to head-butt kittens, and my greatest accomplishment in life is probably an incident of projectile vomiting. (Don’t skoff! It was brilliant.)

Mostly I teach for my food, but there was a brief period when I pushed puppies for a living (first pet’s free kids). I like spicy foods, foreign movies, RPGs, and bad jokes.

This blog has one theme and one thing only, whatever the Hell I feel like writing about at any given moment. That is all.

  1. I’m glad you liked a post on thebigpicturereport.com. I looked at your blog and like your style and sense of humor, and I’m adding your site to my blogroll.

  2. Thank you Arlen. I have enjoyed an awful lot of your material actually. Keep up the good work.

  5. Hello, Dan! Thanks for visiting Hooked and leaving a trail to lead me back to your blog. Your title alone got a chuckle, and your first few posts showed me that we’ve got some simpatico values. Nice to meet you, friend.

  6. Thanks for adding a comment on “Politics and Cardigans”! I appreciate you! You won me over with this quote from one of your politics quotes,
“First I must confess that I was reading Glenn Beck’s website. …I’ve done dumber things in my life. I just can’t think what they would be.”

  8. Thanks for the like on my book review. Will check back in for your latest adventures in Alaska.

  9. Hey northier! I’m southier than just about everyone so i guess we got a whole world of difference between us. So, how come I’m nodding to the stuff you write? I guess true genius cries out for companionship and can be heard a world away…or was it the sound of your projectile vomit? I never perfected that. I heave quietly into the bowl and dont even wake the wife! I’m so repressed. 😦

Thanks for commenting on my blog.

A few things you’ve mentioned in your blog got me to puzzlin’ and a cursory google search answered two of my questions: “what do you teach? and at what level?”
Still, I have some things I’d like to ask you off-blog. If you’re open to that, shoot me an email (wawbat at gmail dot com)

I spent time in the Great Frozen North as well, tugboating out of Nome back in the ’70s. Beautiful and surreal.

  16. Haha, Dan, I had to laugh at “the bearedd catlady of the arctic”, and, of course, I had to look up Bilagaana and Tanik. Now I sort of half-know. BTW, after reading your Native-Indians-films entry I expect you’ve seen James Cameron’s Avatar? The same criticism (the Na’vi needed a white man to save themselves) was levelled at the storyline.

    • Ooh, good point about Avatar. I may have to work that in somehow. Hm…

Yeah, I’m a cat lady. My students all tease me about it. there aren’t too many cats up here, so it stands out even more.

  17. Thanks for liking my World Tapir Day post! P.S. Totally know what you mean. Am typing one-handed cos there’s a cat lying on the other.

  18. Thanks for stopping by my blog. I checked out your “About” and was excited about Barrow, Alaska. I have always wanted to visit Barrow and the closest I ever got was Fairbanks in 1984. Then I saw the atheist connection and the more I poked around I found a kindred spirit. Keep writing about anything you damn feel like. You’re on my blogroll.

  19. Hi Dan, thanks for liking my posts.

  20. Hi Dan, and thank you for visiting my site. I looked up Tanik as well but couldn’t find anything except a construction company. Can you give me a hint?

  23. Hey Dan.

Great blog, mate. I like your style and your subject matter.

Thanks for visiting the Mad Hatters and commenting (I have this thing about people who just ‘like’ and can’t be arsed to actually contribute). Quite how you found us is another matter entirely… but thanks, and feel free to drop by anytime.

Cheers from the North (of England).

  24. Hi, I liked your blog, thanks for the like on my post 😀 thanks!

  25. Thanks for liking Blood Quantum. I just do not “get” how obsessed people become over race and ethnicity and the hatred some eject because someone is not just like them. Guess this also goes for religion. As for me, when they gave out genes for religion, I think I did not receive any. AK is lovely but way too cold for me. I like heat, foodwise and climatewise or at least not too cold. You might like my recipes as well. I did not start out to blog re food but alas…

    • Thank you Juliana, I thought your poem was great. You illustrated the problems quite nicely. I wish i had it to show my old Dine’ students and see how they would react to your predicament. I will certainly check your website out again.

      Food is the best!

  26. Hi Dan!

You’ve developed quite a large following, Dan. I have Chateau as my theme also. Myself, I find the default type color for the black background, which I also use, tough on the eyes. In case you’re interested you can get around that by using the next-to-white font color. I use white, but it makes the words invisible on the format screen–which can be a real pain.

  38. Hello. Thanks for liking my post. Your blog looks very interesting. I will read your posts slowly as I can’t read as fast as a native English speaker. I fly over Alaska every year when I go back to Japan. Once I landed at Alaska for connecting flights. The landscape I saw then was one of the most exotic ones ever. I was also shocked that the airport had a Japanese noodle shop.

  39. Thank you for visiting male/female.

  40. Hey Dan 🙂 Thanks for swinging by my blog, Here Come the Puglets! and for the like. I look forward to perusing your blog 😉

  41. Hi Dan, thank you for liking my photo blog. I was an atheist myself for a few years until I kept meetng really ‘intelligent’ people [at least, in my opinion they were] who actually believed in God and I couldn’t understand why. So began my own journey to find out . I can guarantee that anyone who can lay aside their prejudices/mockery etc and come to the subject with an open and humble mind will find God, just as He has promised us. Eileen

  42. Thanks for liking my recent post Memorial Day 2012. And you live in Barrow, Alaska?! Wow. I watched an episode of “Idiots Abroad” on the Science Channel and (without getting into the details because I’m sure you know them), it was amazing to watch.

  63. Hi Dan,

I’ve actually been to Barrow (Here today, gone to Barrow) and lived to tell about it. I admire the fact that you live there and your sanity seems to be (mostly) intact. I subscribe to many blogs, but must confess that on most of them all I do is look at the pictures. Your’s is one of the few I actually read. Keep on truckin’….

  67. Gotta say two things, thanks for stopping by..and I love your about bit. As a former great white northeast person who is now in the great white Canada…I feel your pain..but life no matter what is better for us up in the North country…it isn’t as hot right?

  76. Hi Dan. I really like your blog. I like that you always have something interesting to say, and you always make me think, laugh, and think some more. I don’t follow a ton of blogs; I refuse to clog up my reader with junk. 81. Hi Dan, thanks for liking my post on the parade in Granada, Nicaragua. I just read a couple of your posts about native Americans, very interesting. Keep up the good work.

  82. Thanks for stopping by my blog, MrMaxPics.and liking my post about Amanda. I read about your animal shelter job and I commend you on taking such an interest in strays. I was smiling with tears at the stories. The hardest thing we have ever done was decide to put one of our cats down. His name is Red but it got to the point where we couldn’t touch him without him crying in pain. His kidneys went bad then the rest of his body quickly shut down. I don’t know if I will ever be able to do it again. My wife and I have been taking care of and finding homes for stray cats for 30yrs. We have almost stopped in the last couple of years because of money and health problems. We just took in a new cat though. I’ve posted about her and her babies. The neighbors do like that lady that brings kittens to the shelter year after year. We hope to be able to convince her to get the cats that are left around her house spayed or neutered if we offer to help. Your descriptions of your travels is very good. I had an uncle that lived outside of Anchorage for about 20yrs. until the early 90’s. Thanks for the interesting stories.

  83. Thanks for the compliment on my photo. not really sure how you even found my site, since i was literally working on it as comments came in. just getting my feet wet w/

  110. Hi Dan,

I’m a little farther north myself, in the Seattle area.Thank You for liking my post, I appreciate it. I saw your post on the majority and think it quite good. Let’s face it, there is comfort and security in being part of the majority; it is harder to go against consensus when you know that you know what is true for you. It takes courage to do it and to be able to stand firm when the majority give you grief for it.

  111. Just wanted to say thanks for liking a photo on my blog and also wanted to offer a copy of my book titled “No Rain” if you didn’t get it already which is a free pdf download. You can find the link to it in the sidebar on my blog at http://www.sunsets4life.com – – – I have followed your blog and linked to you as well on my “who likes my photos” page. Happy blogging!!

  113. Thanks for stopping by my “prosaictraveller”. I read a couple of your posts and love your stories of the North. I have always enjoyed seeing other parts of the world that I know I will never get to see.

  114. Dan – how do you make your blog show the “Share This” and “Like This” buttons appear in the default post. On my posts, they open up only when I click on the comments link or the title. I have tried all the various settings. I even tested the Chateau theme you’re using. Did you actually customize the theme for this feature?

Your blog is the only one I have seen that does this for default, hence I asked.

    • You know, I’m actually not sure what I did. I remember I tried dozens of different things including threats and profanity before they appeared, and I honestly don’t remember what finally worked. I’ll look around and see if I can figure out how it’s working.

      • Ah, so I am not the only one that finds this frustrating…
        Thanks for checking.

      • I’m horribly technophobic and usually short on time. I had the blog for months before I had all that set up. I just remember trying one thing after another for the better part of an afternoon during Christmas vacation. My nephews dogs must have wondered why I was so angry.

  115. Hi Dan, Thanks for checking out my site. Thought I’d stop by to see who might be interested in what I have to say and here you are. i have enjoyed every post I have read of your so far! Looking forward to hearing may more of your random thoughts 🙂

  116. Hey Dan thanks for liking my panorama pics. It’s nice to have my Alaska pictures liked by an Alaskan. Makes me feel legitimate.

Btw, I love that you have a category about movie villains! I had a webpage once dedicated to the same thing, ha. I’m a christian, so I don’t know about Jesus being a villain, but I sure agree that he can be terrifying, and said and did a lot of shocking things.

Keep up the good work; I’m looking forward to browsing more (even though we often don’t see eye to eye) Though it’s thanks to people like you that I spend way too much time on the internet, dammit. 🙂

Looking forward to reading more about your adventures in the cold but beautiful state of Alaska!

I also did some work with the Navajo people, although it was only for a summer. We were in Klagetoh, AZ. I was amazed by the people there. When I asked the children, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” they did not understand the question. Their desire to “be” anything has been stolen from them over the years. Sad to see. Anyway, I enjoyed your site so far.

  166. Hi Daniel, with some delay I’d like to thank you for liking a post on the blog of triptao.com 🙂 Greetings to Alaska from very far away!

  167. Hi Dan – Thanks for visiting me at http://ja2da.com.
Alaska has always been on my list of places to visit as soon as . . .
Nice pictures! Oh and I loved the end of term report (Thoughts on the Cherokee something was it?) I’d hadn’t thought of it all that way until now.
    David
PS Interesting that it was the establishment (recognition?) of a police force that solved the Navaho raiding problem. So, now we have a collective to blame – “The police should do something about . . . “, or “I will call the police . . .”

Here in the UK we have just had a few instances of Eastern European individuals taking the law into their own hands – in a most civilised way – the owner of a business recently caught one of his employees with his hand in the till and promptly hung a sign round his neck “I am a thief” he then frog marched him through the town centre to the police station. Here the thief was released and the business owner was arrested for kidnap. It caused a few raised eyebrows but only a little sympathy. It seems we aren’t too keen on one on one justice either!

  168. What a wonderful blog you have here. Thanks so much for stopping by my blog. I look forward to getting better acquainted through blogging. I will follow your blog because your posts are so well thought out! 🙂

  200. Hi there,
Thanks for stopping by my blog and liking some of my pictures. I love AK too, I used to go up there on the tankers into Valdez. Did some fishing on a catcher/processer out of Dutch. I voted for it in the Free State Project but NH won 😦
I like your style! I also blog about whatever the hell I feel like, tho I intend it to be more concentrated on sailing/working offshore, traveling, and politics(libertarian) which are my favorite things. Besides reading, eating, drinking, etc 😉
Hope you stop by again, I’ll be back here for sure.

  201. Heya, just popping by to say thank you for liking ‘Iced Sirens’ on Scribes Inkorporated, your blog looks interesting, I will have a proper read when I have a less hazy head. 🙂

  210. I’m so glad you happened by my site as to give me the opportunity to find yours! In the time I should have been posting more exciting things to do in Vegas… as this is what the “Mommy do” whilst the littles slumber… I’ve instead been whirling around your little corner of the blogging universe, and loving EVERY moment. Thank you for the charm and wit you’ve been feeding my screen for the last few hours, oh Cat Lady of the far, far, far North!

I love your Vegas street art segments. You’ll have to check out the cultural contributions of the Boulder City walls on your next visit. Oh, and you may have to make some time to venture out to Pahrump/Amargosa too! No erotic museum adventure is complete without the rare finds available in Nye County… and while you won’t find a review for it on my site, I highly recommend lunch at Sheri’s. It’s not everyday you can have a family dining experience in a brothel, amidst the merchants no less – free tours included!

Thanks again, and keep those kitties near; it’s gonna be a cold one!

  211. dwd,
thanks fer stoppin by my site. I always come to about pages first and was interested when I saw you lived in Barrow Alaska. I have never been, but due to it’s indisputable charms I have always wanted to go (basically that it’s so darn far north and remote).
Anyway, I was interested in yer post I was reading, before I came to see what you were about, so I’ll get back to it.
    Anyway and again thanks 🙂

  212. Ha ha, love your blog and your “About” page. Thanks for visiting mine.

  213. Ni hao ! as we say in Beijing/China. I am chuffed to bits that you have decided to follow my blog. I’ve been flipping back through yours and it is fascinating; what different lives we live. I am looking forward to getting to know you better through your blog posts, and I hope you will find my posts about life in China interesting .
Merry Christmas – or as we say in China, Shengdan kuaile! (The literal translation of this is ‘birth of god be happy’)

  214. I was looking to talk to someone and I know you have an interest in both Native American issues and movies. I heard some news today that a movie that came out earlier this month that used a slur that is associated with a native community in northern New Jersey and portrayed them (by Woody Harrelson!) as violent hillbillies living among garbage.

Anyway, I know some of these people and apparently they’re pretty upset by it. The kids are now getting harassed at school because of the movie – or so one of the teachers at the school told my mother.

Whether or not they should be considered an Indian tribe or not is a contentious issue. In any case, they’re a racially mixed community that has been living in the area for about three hundred years. It amazes me that unless people have been taught to be sensitive about racism directed at a particular group of people they seem to be unable to apply general principles. As I mentioned, I have some mild familiarity with the community and they have suffered from prejudice quite enough in their history. That the director/writer would do this is shocking to me. For the time being, I’m assuming the actors didn’t know that the script was referencing a real group of people.

Unfortunately, I haven’t seen the movie. I kind of hate calling a movie racist if I haven’t seen it.

    • It’s always a tough question as to whether or not a given character speaks for the movie as a whole. Maybe the point was to portray the character as racist, and maybe it was to actually express a negative view, or both. …hard to say without seeing the movie. But of course sometimes the harm is done regardless of the intent behind the story. It’s a damned shame to hear of kids getting flack for something like this. Do you know if there is any chance to counteract the movie’s message in the community?

  215. Dan,

I just sort of happened to stumble onto your blog, and found it interesting… mostly your astute perspective.

Drop by Sam & Lee’s some day, sit downstairs, and ask Mrs Kim to scare up the old guy who did all the photography. I live across the road from the back door.

    Floyd

    • Hi Floyd, I wonder if we’ve met before. I’ll bet we recognize each other when the time comes. I’ll definitely stop by Sam&Lees and ask about you. I’m at the college, btw, usually in Browerville Center in the afternoons during the regular semester.

  216. Hi! I’m glad you stopped by, thank you for appreciating my photos. looking forward to explore your blog, I’ve been fascinated by Alaska since I was a kid. You’ve just got yourself a new follower:)
    Also, Happy New Year!

  217. Thank you for reading my post on suspending belief at the movies and the theater. From where you live, there must be a lot of beliefs that you must suspend. I understand that if you lose a glove you die. Well, I just spent $1,000 on a refrigerator. I guess you don’t have to worry about such things. Best of luck with your work.

  218. Met the neighbor of my rental house in Temecula accidentally today, when I was there to fix a leak at my tenants. Turns out she is from Alaska, only comes here for a month or two every year. Where in Alaska, I asked. Barrow, the top of the world, she said. Wow, I know a guy named Dan (didn’t remember your last name). She didn’t know you. Works for the government there. Got a kick out of it though. Barrow’s population is listed at 4,200. What are the odds?

  235. Somehow you got to follow me on Twitter, which led me to your blog. I’m so glad I got here, as I have thoroughly enjoyed your posts. Most northeist I managed was to Juneau on a Holland America cruise a couple of years ago. My son has been in Canada for six years. He is bringing his Canadian wife and baby back to Australia in the New Year. It seems prairie winters are not to their liking. Will look forward to further posts. You just may have inspired me to return to my own moribund blog. Cheers.

  284. Projectile vomiting?

Okaaaaay … I was young, cold, alone in San Francisco at night on my way back to the ship with an armful of new books. Stopped at a bar for a drink. The barman was Japanese and I remembered that sake is served hot. Ish. I also knew some of the words and ritual, the barman was impressed and bought me the next one.

I reciprocated, after which so did he; and so did I etc etc … somewhere in the evening was a bowl of clam chowder, I think. Anyway—

I awoke next morning to a redecorated world. Clam chunder is every bit as good as a spray-paint bomb, I tell you. If there were an Olympic Projectile Vomiting event I’d have taken gold and set an unbeatable world record … (and I still had my books, but no idea how I ever made it back to the ship).

  300. It’s true. You woke up and found yourself in Uncle Bardie Country. Now that you have followed Uncle Bardie, you may find yourself at that fork in the road that you have to take. With Uncle Bardie for a guide, you can be comforted that you may stub your toe on a pun, find you can’t resist laughing at those things you never thought funny, and wake up to wonder what Uncle Bardie is up to. It’s okay. That itch can be scratched. Simply tune in to the next Post, It could very well be a doozy or not. Either way it will be coming from the whacky mind of Uncle Bardie. So thanks for following Uncle Bardie’s Stories & Such. It beats bananas any day. Unless…but that’s a whole ‘nother thang. And one last thing. Have a great day (or night, depending on your perspective).

  301. Hey, thanks for following Scott’s Sky Watch. I really like your blog. Great writing, and a great perspective!

  302. You’re very talented. Your writing is raw and real. I wish I had the time required to read your last post in its entirety for example… That’s to say I wish your posts were a bit shorter so that your visitors can decide to read them then and there, and not bookmark it for another time.. which we all know hardly ever does end well 🙂 Thank you for following me. Glad we connected 🙂

  303. Thanks for the follow Daniel! Fun reading your About page. I especially like your theme for your blog! I thought, “Hey, that’s my theme too!”

  304. What the fuck are you doing all the way up there.

  314. Hi Dan,

  326. Hi Dan,
Finally visited your blog! It’s so great that you really you do live northerthanthou. Must be totally amazing up there!! Anyway, I’ll be seeing you on Twitter.
    Best Jen

    • Hi Jen,

I’m glad you made the trek on over. I’m sort of wishing I was in the arctic right now, as I’m in Santa Fe and it’s really hot. Going back in a few weeks though.

      See you on Twitter.

  327. Half awake, late morning today, I did as requested and clicked one click at a time and yes you are northier then me and due more westernier. Similar perhaps, I get head butted by full grown cats that think they are kittens. Yet, I have no idea what pushed puppies means, pray Sir, would thou please enlighten this ol’ Brit. I also blog about whatever the hell I feel like, but I always my aim in life is kindness, unless I am pissed off, but then I’m not sure I would blog those moments and they are rare. So, “Morning Mr Thou” {{{giggle}}} or informally “Watcha Northier”

    • Good morning Bexy. When I say that I pushed puppies for a living, I mean that I was PR for an animal shelter. One of my jobs was trying to get strays adopted.

I hope you are off to a wonderful day. I shall be sleeping soon myself.

      • In that case “Na night, sleep tight and dunna let the wee beasties bite”. I shall blog post all about the meaning and accents for you to see it tomorrow.

  328. Thanks for the visit and follow on ‘El Malpais’ … it is relatively hot here in NM so a good time to stay in, sit under the ceiling fan and read blogs…good stuff you have.

  329. Thanks for stopping by my site choosing to follow it, Dan. Much appreciated. Haven’t yet made it to Alaska, but I am stunned daily by the beauty of the world around me. Be well.

  330. Thanks for popping over to couchmagpie.com a while back. Wish it hadn’t taken me so long to check out your blog. It’s great – nice to see that you have the same random blogging philosophy that I have – keep up the good work! Down with focused niche blogs!!

  331. Ah, from one foreign film junkie to another, than you for choosing to follow the latest of the blogs from this house. Of course you must be aware that the human is merely the typist on this tail.

  332. I’m shivering just looking at your picture. Love your writing philosophy! Me? I’m s South Carolinian, born and bred. I’d die in a climate like that! LOL. I’m glad you found my little corner of the world. Welcome to the fence jumpers and thanks for following my blog. @sheilamgood at Cow Pasture Chronicles

  333. You are a brave soul for picking the beach in Barrow! How do you enjoy the polar plunges?

  334. Thanks for checking out my blog. I look forward to exploring yours. Loved reading about your series of homes as a child

Well I say write, more putting words in sentences and hoping they make sense at the end!
I like your words and the way you put them together. I figure if I read enough of your stuff a little of your good style might rub off!
    Regards
    Dave.

  336. Thank you for stopping by and joining my blog. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy sharing my recipes and travels with you. Welcome aboard.

  338. Hi

  339. My God, the poor kittens, those luckless b*st*rds!

  340. What a great site you have here. Thanks for visiting mine and liking Hot Lisbon, You’re Cool.

  341. You certainly are a “tell it like it is” kinda guy. Love when people keep it real.

  342. Hi Dan, I’ve been enjoying reading your blog, and I was hoping I could interest you in writing something for our (me and my collaborator, Nathaniel) zine project. It’s a day in the life type of thing, and we’re trying to pull together contributions from all 24 time zones for Jan 1, 2018. We’re exploring how one period of time is experienced differently by people in different places. This link should give you an idea of what we’re trying to do:

  343. Thanks for the follow! I also like how you just post whatever you like on here, that’s pretty much what I do on my blog too!

  344. “Northiness” is fucking hysterical and I’m jealous as hell. Pacific Northiwesterness just doesn’t have the same ring.

You only get points for the projectile vomiting if the target was particularly deserving and well hit.

You’re the only one I’ve encountered thus far who has legal rights to a beard, because Barrow. The rest are hipsters wearing testosterone scarves, a seasonal accessory unsubstantiated by fortitude and/or callouses. I’m bitter.

  345. I was in the navy with a Danial Wall (Wally) in ’75 VAW112. He bought a 250 Yamaha Enduro from me which he took home to Arizona when he got out of service. Small World ?????

  346. Sitting at my little cabin at 7,000 feet in Ruidoso, NM, less than 10 miles from Dahteste’s grave. Somehow I discovered your website and read your very interesting review of the movie. Now I will have to watch it.
In 2015 we have a mare give birth to an interesing looking filly at our ranch in Texas.
The filly has very unusual white markings on her head and has one black eye and one blue eye. The blue eye is very spooky.
Since we come to New Mexico quite often (over place in just 5 mintues from the Mescalero reservation I started looking for the Apache words for medicine woman
and that is how I learned about Dahteste.
That is what we named our filly who now at age three has becom a pretty good
race horse. She has been running in Idaho and now is being shipped to California for a big race.
She is a gorgeous filly from a great pedigree and we hope she makes quite a bit
more money and lives a long life as a broodmare.
I have a connection with the Apaches that says he can get permission for someone to take her to Dahteste’s grave. That will be a good day.

Thanks for listenng. And I will read some more of your postes. And I must know 10 guys named Dan Wall. All from Texas and Oklahoma.

  347. I’m hooked. Thank you.

  348. Ok! That’s north!

  349. We just followed each other on Twitter (@McArtichoke) and I really admire what you’re doing. My favorite TV show is ‘The Last Alaskans’ on Animal Planet, about the Alaska Wildlife Refuge and its residents. I just hope you survive this silly bastard in the WH now.

  350. Watch out for polar bears and don’t forget – ice or no ice, go fishing.

  351. Man you live so far North you’d need some whiskey to stop yourself from freezing!
    More power to ya!

  352. I concede you’re more northier. But I be higher (Denver).

  353. Damn, that’s up there!

  354. Oh, wow, what a cool place to live. I’ve been to Pond Inlet on the northeastern tip of Baffin Island, which is a similar latitude. I wonder if they’re similar! Mind you, Navajo Nation is pretty amazing, too. 😊

Indeed the Bible describes individuals like yourself who have inching ears and only listen to those who tell them what they want to hear.

  363. Hello Dan,
