Knowing that I don’t believe in god, people sometimes ask me if I celebrate Christmas.
My answer?
I can celebrate rampant commercialism just as well as any Christian.
…I could also celebrate giving, togetherness, family, kindness and charity, just as well as any Christian, but I am increasingly convinced that this doesn’t have much to do with the holiday in question.
Yeah man, Black Friday makes me rather embarrassed to be human (so does christianity). I celebrate Christmas for the tree. Having a big fat great smelling twinkling tree in my house makes my morning coffee way more fun and winter worthwhile.
This year, I’m buying gifts on Etsy. http://www.etsy.com. Why not help out other Americans and artisans. And everything is getting wrapped in whatever I have laying around the house, which is already getting interesting.
